As one of the most elusive animals in the wild, Mountain Lions live in the most rugged country in the West. They are hunted exclusively with hounds and extremely nomadic with the mature Toms having a home range in excess of 100 square miles. A typical day on this hunt is done with snow on the ground and starts well before daylight looking for tracks from trucks, ATVs, or snowmobiles. Once a track is found, the hounds are released to follow the trail until they tree or bay up the Mountain Lion. If no snow is present, we hike canyons with the hounds until they “strike” a track, then we follow them and help them if necessary. This does require hiking several miles a day and can is very physically demanding. Although snow does increase our chances of finding and catching a Mountain Lion, our hounds do not require snow to hunt. If the hound is experienced and you are looking for more than just the kill, I would recommend a dry ground hunt to have the full experience. This hunt is a harvest objective until and tags are available over the counter until the quote rills up. Please note, that even though it is legal to kill females, this is a trophy Tom hunt.
